Anyone actually playing 7? I know of no one personally, and I’ve played them all religiously

It shipped with Denuvo and I don’t pay for malware. It’s the first Civ game I haven’t bought at launch. I’m including the original.

That’s about as expected. As a big fan of civ, it just looked like a worse version of 6, which was a worse version of 5.

Only reason for the bigger playercount of 6 is because of Sean Bean’s incredible narration.

Honestly that’s just how Civ has been for the past few releases, most people don’t get it until the typical set of 2 major expansion packs come out and eventually go on sale. The base price of the full package has always been crazy high.

We will see. 'Cause for all Civ 6’s (and every Civ’s) controversy, this feels different… It’s like people have forgotten about 7.

Well they removed the ability to play as “A civilization” in the game called “Civilization” so yeah everyone I know has swore off it.

Yes and no. If you want to play China you can play as the various chinese incarnations from beginning to end.

It only works with China for some mysterious reason though.

Yeah, I like it. It’s definitely an unfinished product and lacking a lot of content and polish atm, but it’s got the bones of a good game. Absolutely not worth the current asking price tho

I mean why play an unfinished game? The radical changes sound interesting to me but it needs at least two add-ons to flourish, the same old story as with 5 and 6. I can wait and pick up the complete experience for half the price if that ever sees the light of day after the layoffs.

I gave up after the 20th bug I encountered. (Yes I kept track.) It’s a shame because I actually liked the eras system.

I played through exactly one full game, and it just felt… pointless, I guess? Like I was just clicking through turns to get to the end and none of it mattered. Then it told me I’d lost and was like “K” and then played Civ VI for a bit.

I don’t buy civ games until they release all the DLC. Since CIV 5 it seems like they have released unfinished games that lack major game mechanics on launch and the game only gets finished through DLC.

Poor adoption and sales with CIV 7 is their own fault. They have conditioned the market to wait for the DLC.

Firaxis are like the Bethesda of turn based strategy games. They release buggy jank and expect modders to fix it.

I listened. I bought Civ6, hated it, didn’t get any of the predatory DLC and went back to Civ4. Didn’t give Civ7 so much as a glance. Sad to hear it went downhill from 6 though.

It is a Civ tradition, BotS made Civ4 amazing, but I’d argue the base game was solid and just needed some mechanical polish.

They are basically gig workers like in the film industry. This was always the case with QA jobs and low ranking artists, but nowadays it also happens to the other roles in a development project.

I think every downturn in gaming history has led to explosions in indie dev studios and products.

this one feels a bit different; first time I’ve seen companies posting record profits and bragging about them, while laying devs off in absolute droves. it’s almost as if consolidating a billion competing IPs into a handful of publisher/owners who don’t really care about games per se, but see the enormous financial value in controlling the IP and production landscapes may have been a bad idea.

don’t get me wrong, someone comes along and offers me billions for my company, probably gonna take it, but you can see how it becomes reductive; and then the people calling the shots end up knowing very little about the actual mechanics of the industry… yeah we’re in for very fun times.

Indies will keep producing great stuff. Some of them will also get gobbled up. Support the rest please!
